Question 1: Read the lines and answer the questions:

“Next year the green……………………of beauty rare!”

(a) What is being referred to in these lines?

Answer: The Gulmohar tree planted by the speaker’s dad is being referred to in these lines.

(b) What do you think the poet means by ‘blossom flared’?

Answer: The poet has used the words ‘blossom flared’ which mean that the tree was full of colourful red blossoms. It had flowered.

(c) Why does the poet call it a ‘red-roofed’ tree?

Answer: The tree is called a ‘red-roofed’ tree because its red blossoms were so plentiful that they were like a roof at the top of the tree.

Question 2: Where was the tree planted?

Answer: The tree was planted next to the track beside the poet’s house.

Question 3: How did the poet and the others react to the first shoots of green that appeared on the branches of the tree?

Answer: When the first shoots of green appeared on the branches of the tree, the poet and his family were very happy. Some of them reacted by saying ‘Ha, that’s great!’ and ‘Wow!’ They looked upon the tree with pride and affection as it grow.

(a) What feeling is the poet referring to?

Answer: The poet is referring to the feeling of being overpowered by the usefulness and greatness of the tree.

(b) What makes the poet feel so?

Answer: The poet feels so as he is filled with a sense of awe at the tree which continued to nourish even after being cut down.

(c) What event had taken place immediately before?

Answer: The tree had been chopped down and its roots, trunk and branches were taken to sawmill. Birds then came down and flew away with the remaining twigs of the tree to build their nests.

Question 5: How did the tree pay the poet back for all his love and care?

Answer: The tree sheltered the poet and his family from the sun and rain. It covered the track like a roof with its red blossoms. The speaker and his siblings ran around it and climbed it.

Question 6: How long did it take to cut down the aged tree? What effect did this act have on other things?

Answer: It took four hours to cut down the aged tree. The poet and his family were shocked and the labourers looked sheepish.

Question 7: Describe the poet’s relationship with the gulmohar tree.

Answer: The gulmohar tree was planted by the poet’s father. The family tended it with love and care. The excitement grew day by day when the tree started to get its shoots. They drove away the cows and goats which could damage it. The poet spent a lot of time caring for it and also playing on and around it. The tree was a mute witness to his boyish exploits.

Question 8: What do you think will happen if we do not respect nature and all that it gives us?

Answer: If we do not respect nature and all that it gives us, it is possible that we may become victims of natural disasters. We will be left with no greenery. There will be no groundwater and the Earth will become prone to floods. The poet is trying to tell us that we are ruthless in out treatment to nature.
