Question 1: When was Dr Dwarakanath born?
Answer: Dr. Dwarakanath Kotnis was born in a lower middle-class family on October 10, 1910 in Sholapur, Mumbai.
Question 2: Where did Dr Dwarakanath study his medicine?
Answer: Dr Dwarakanath completed his graduation in medicine from G. S. Medical College, Bombay.
Question 3: Why was Dr. Kotnis sent to China?
Answer: In 1937, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the communist General Zhu De requested Jawaharlal Nehru to send Indian physicians to China to help the Chinese soldiers. The President of the Indian National Congress, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose accepted the request and made arrangements to send a team of volunteer doctors. Dr. Kotnis was sent as the part of Indian Medical Mission Team in September 1938 as he was a dedicated physician and was willing to travel around the world. Thus Dr. Kotnis was sent to China to help the Chinese soldiers.
Question 4: What was Dr. Kotni’s contribution to the Dr. Bethune International Peace Hospital in China?
Answer: Dr. Kotnis once served as Dr. Bethune International Peace Hospital’s doctor. He took over the post of the first President of the Bethune International Peace Hospital after Dr. Norman Bethune passed away. He worked as a lecturer earlier for sometime in the military area at the Dr. Bethune Hygiene School.
Question 5: Why did Dr. Kotnis opt to stay back in China?
Answer: Except Dr. Kotnis, all other doctors returned to India after the Second Sino-Japanese War. Dr. Kotnis decided to serve at the military base so, he opted to stay back in China.
Question 6: How did Chinese show their gratitude towards Dr. Kotnis?
Answer: In 1976, in order to cherish the memory of Dr. Kotnis, the Chinese government built a memorial hall for him in Shijiazhuang city, Hebei Province. Along with the Canadian Dr. Norman Bethune, he continues to be revered by the Chinese people. In April 2005, both their graves were covered completely in flowers donated by the Chinese people during the Qingming Festival, a day used by the Chinese to commemorate their ancestors. A small museum there has a hand book which contains words that Kotnis wrote in his “Passage from India to China,” some of the instruments that the surgeons used at their time and many photographs of doctors. China has also honoured him with stamp in 1982.

Answer: The selfless service rendered by Dr Kotnis to the Chinese soldiers moved the heart of the Chinese. He is deeply respected by them. As the wife of Dr. Kotnis, she has also been honoured all along. Since Dr. Kotnis was from India, she was a regular invitee at the Indian Embassy functions in China.

Answer: Dr. Kotnis was a doctor who rendered selfless service and saved the lives of hundreds of wounded Chinese soldiers. So, this can be said that Dr. Kotnis was a kind-hearted and generous humanitarian who wanted to serve his society selflessly.
