Sometimes, these plates get locked together and cannot move. When this happens, pressure begins to build up. Then one day suddenly, the locked plates break free, and there is a big earthquake.

Answer: A seismograph has a revolving drum. It has also a weight that hold a tracer. When there is a tremor in the earth, the weight begins to vibrate. The vibrations get traced on the turning drum through the tracer. The fluctuations in the traced line indicate the intensity of the earthquake.
